[2.0] Creating a CNAME Record in Bluehost

IMPORTANT:

  • When setting up a CNAME record, you are basically creating a subdomain


Information:


To better understand the concept of subdomains, let’s check the anatomy of this domain: www.wellness.com

  • The “.com” is the top-level domain

  • And the business name “wellness” is the second-level domain

  • The part of a domain that displays before the first dot of the business name is a subdomain, that’s right! The “www” is a subdomain


But you don’t have to use “www” as your subdomain, you can basically use any word or phrase you want to create a unique web address (without having to purchase a new domain) like using the word quiz or survey


  • Subdomains act as an extension of a domain that you already own



Step #1: Access Your Domain Settings

The first step to managing your DNS records is to access the Zone Editor. The steps vary depending on what type of account you are using: Bluerock or Legacy


Bluerock:


  • Log in to your Bluehost control panel

  • Click the Domains tab from the side navigation menu to the left

  • Identify the domain you wish to work with and click the Manage button next to it

  • Then choose DNS from the drop-down menu that appears

  • Scroll down to locate the record type you wish to update, and click the Add Record button

  • In the Host Record field, enter the desired subdomain (e.g. quiz)

  • In the Points To field, type in domains.bucket.io

  • Leave the TTL field at its default setting, it basically indicates the time Bluehost will take for changes to take full effect

  • Click Save to confirm your record


Legacy:


  • Log in to your Bluehost control panel

  • Click the Domains tab from the navigation menu at the top of your screen

  • Click Zone Editor from the sub-menu

  • You’ll see a Select a Domain drop-down box, select the domain you wish to work with

  • You’ll see an Add DNS record form

  • For the Host record field type desired subdomain (e.g. quiz)

  • Leave the TTL field at its default setting, it basically indicates the time Bluehost will take for changes to take full effect

  •  From the Type drop-down menu select CNAME Record

  • In the Points to field type domains.bucket.io

  • Click the Add Record button to confirm your changes


Please note that for changes to take full effect you must allow about 4 hours


Step #2: Access your bucket.io account

  • Click My Account from the top-right corner

  • Click Custom Domains from the left-hand menu

  • Click the Add custom domain green button

  • A configuration guideline will pop up, click the Continue button

  • insert the domain name as [the hostname you put in Bluehost] + [your domain name], for example: quiz.wellness.com

  •  Click the Create & Verify Domain button

  • It should display as “Verifying”. The verification process could take up to 5 minutes and should change to “Verified” status
